Stroke Savers
Club Selection and
Course Management
There are many factors
that affect the final
score for many golfers,
especially the majority
of amateur players. The
key is the ability to
choose the correct club
and execute the correct
shot. There are two
great examples that will
show how club selection
and managing your game
will lower your scores.
When teeing off on par
4’s and 5’s most golfers
use their driver
regardless of the course
design. Before every
tee, take note of
bunkers, width of
fairways and any other
hazards that may come
into play. Also, look
for the best spot you
would like the ball to
be to hit your next shot
from. If you can hit
your 3-wood straight,
use that club and keep
the ball in play.
Penalty strokes off the
tee really add up at the
end of the day. If the
par 5 is unreachable in
two shots it will only
help your score to use a
3-wood or iron off the
tee and stay in the
fairway. You can still
be on the green in 3
shots and the
possibility of birdie or
par is far greater using
this strategy.
The other tip to improve
your score is to use the
club that is realistic
for the shot you need to
hit. If you are 230
yards away from the
green and can only hit
the ball 220 yards, it
only brings danger into
play by trying to muscle
the club an extra 10
yards. It is far better
to hit 2 short irons and
safely reach. Don’t just
try to hit the ball far
each time, play for the
overall goal, which is
your total at the end of
the day. When people try
this strategy they are
amazed at how many
strokes they lower their
score by.
