Destination

Terra Nova Golf Estates, sitting on the western boundary of the town of Port Blandford , is located in perhaps one of the most beautiful, pristine and untouched areas of the province. It offers you some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country, and as you feel the sun on your face and the wind in your hair, you will experience nothing less than nature at its finest.

Terra Nova National Park

Terra Nova Golf Estates is located immediately adjacent to the Terra Nova National Park . The park, which encompasses 400 km 2 of boreal forest and scenic coastline, will allow you to see icebergs float in sheltered fjords while bald eagles and great horned owls soar overhead. It is not unusual to see ospreys, eagles, lynx, bear and moose. Camping and picnicking facilities abound as well as hiking and nature trails. Take a guided tour with park interpreters or explore the wilderness alone in all its glory. If you are a mariner, excellent docking facilities at Salton's Brook provide easy access to the park and many on shore conveniences to make your visit an enjoyable one.

The whole family will enjoy a trip to the Marine Interpretation Centre. As well as many exciting marine exhibits, you will see aquariums, a touch tank, an underwater camera and much more. Adults and children alike are entertained and educated about marine life in the area through live performances that take place on a daily basis in the park. Go on a nature walk, watch a puppet show or visit the outdoor theatre at Newman sound. At Sandy Pond, bathe on the sandy beach, rent canoes, fresh water kayaks, paddleboats or surf bikes. For the more adventurous, go sea kayaking with a qualified guide or take part in a boat tour where you will almost surely see a bald eagle.

Sections of the park also remain open in the winter months. You can participate in such outdoor adventures as cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, winter camping or ice fishing.

The Kittiwake Coast

The treasures of central Newfoundland extend well beyond Terra Nova National Park. Just one hour west of Port Blandford, you will find the historic town of Salvage, a beautiful fishing village known for its restoration of many of its fish stages that wrap around the sheltered harbour. Salvage, now a respite for many visiting artists from around the world, was named one of Canada’s 10-prettiest towns by Harrowsmith Country Life Magazine (2002). En route to Salvage you will pass through the town of Eastport, which has one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the province. Walk along this stretch of beach where you will see sand dunes, sea grass, shore birds and the lazy lagoon. Take a day trip to the town of Terra Nova. Tucked away amid the forests and rivers, it boasts a beautiful fresh water beach. Take a refreshing dip or take a leisurely stroll through one of Newfoundland’s prettiest towns.

The Discovery Trail (Bonavista Peninsula)

To the south of Port Blandford, we find the Bonavista Peninsula. A trip to this peninsula will capture your imagination and lift your soul. The Discovery Trail is rich in heritage and culture from the tip of the peninsula at Bonavista to the town of Trinity. Go back to 1497 when John Cabot landed in Bonavista and discovered the New World. A replica of his 15th century caravel, The Matthew, serves as a museum while the restored buildings of the Ryan Premises, local fish stores of the time, house an interpretation centre operated by Parks Canada. A visit to the Bonavista lighthouse will find staff in period costume who will recount for you in their local dialect, the life of the lighthouse keepers and their families. A visit to the Dungeon, a cave carved by the sea, is breathtaking yet slightly intimidating.

En route back up the peninsula a visit to the Mockbegger Plantation Provincial Historic Site will take you to one of Newfoundland’s earliest fishing rooms. In Elliston explore more than 100 root cellars, small storage spaces built into the community’s hillsides used to keep vegetables cool, frost free and edible throughout the long winter months.

The historic old town of Trinity is a centre for tourism. There are many unique bed and breakfasts, inns, craft stores and galleries. Boat tours operate from the town and provide an excellent opportunity to see whales, icebergs, and birds and to view spectacular coastal scenery. The town features a number of historic properties but is perhaps best known for its magical celebration of history and culture through its Rising Tide Theatre. Trinity houses the most highly acclaimed professional theatre company in the province. In settings from fish stages to sweeping meadows, with the Atlantic Ocean as its backdrop, Rising Tide brings you the stories, songs and plays of our people six days a week as seen through the eyes of some of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most talented artists.

On your way back to Port Blandford, visit the site of the filming of “Random Passage”. The film set, maintained by the local community, provides an interpretive walk through the 1600s and 1700s that is truly a unique experience.
